Diet Review: The Gene Smart Diet

The Gene Smart Diet is based on the principle that the secret to weight control or reducing the risk of diseases lies in the working of our genes. Formulated by PhD holder Floyd Chilton, this diet believes that the bioactive substances present in the food send direct messages to the genes which keep us healthy. The Gene Smart diet emphasizes that whatever we are eating also influences the way our genes work with our immunity and anti-inflammatory system. So to support the expression of our genes to enhance our health, we have to increase the nutrient level of our food by increasing the intake of fiber, polyphenols, Omega 3 fatty acids. This should be accompanied with exercise and it will boost weight loss and reduce the risk of diseases. It is designed to prepare our body to follow a healthy diet and exercise regime throughout our life.

The typical Gene Smart diet plan:

Day 1:
Go on a celery soup fast the whole day. This leads to a mere 575 calories load for the whole day.

Day 2-21: This phase is called the “adaptive phase”. During these days, the observer of the diet is allowed to have meals and snacks which total up to 1,600 calories/day. You can extend the days and continue with the same diet plan, if you have a lot of weight to lose.

Day 22-35: This phase is called the “preconditioning phase”, where you can eat meals and snacks for upto 1,800 calories a day.

Optimal maintanence phase: This is after a person has observed the earlier phases of the diet well and achieved a weight he or she would now like to maintain. This phase allows a daily calorie intake of about 2000 calories. However, the Gene Smart diet book does offer ideas, tips and plans for people who need to consume more or less than the calorie levels otherwise recommended on average throughout.

How does this diet work?

The Gene Smart diet rests on the premise that our genes are not meant to take the kind of load modern day processed foods have to offer. If we eat healthy food, our genes will work their way to boost our immunity levels. Increasing intake of omega 3 fatty acids which is a key component of the diet itself has benefits of preventing osteoporosis, hypertension, menopausal problems and balances hormones in women. The high fiber supports weight loss and cleanses our system. The polyphenols boost our immune system. The diet also relies heavily on the basic assumption that the person on this diet will make an effort to exercise more.
