6% of North American Households Use Pirated Kodi Devices

According to findings of the Canadian broadband management company Sandvine, nearly 9% of all North American households own at least one Kodi device. About 2/3 of them actively use pirate add-ons, which makes it millions of households in total.

The Kodi media player software was previously known as XBMC. It has become particularly popular in recent years as the main source of entertainment, often loaded with illegal add-ons that enable users to access pirated movies and TV-shows.

The latest study analyzed data from more than 250,000 anonymized households throughout North America and found out that about 8.8% of the Internet-connected households across North America have an active Kodi device. This makes up millions of households and many more potential users. But, of course, not all of them are necessarily pirates: Kodi has plenty of legal uses, so the study focused on the use of pirate add-ons. It was estimated that about 68.6% of the households with Kodi devices also use pirate add-ons.

The study also outlined clear geographical differences in Kodi adoption within the region: for instance, over 10% of the Canadian households have a Kodi device installed, which is more than in the United States.

Sandvine explained that the study was in part triggered by an increased interest from content service providers, copyright owners, and regulators. Most of them believe that the Kodi software is the cause of the piracy problem, but the study laudably rejects this claim. The company explains that Kodi simply serves as a front end even if it disappears, the illegal material would be accessible via a web browser, or via another media player.
